====== Internet And Safety ======
This page outlines the topics taught in our kids' "Internet and Safety Class".

====== Overview ======
Most students are already familiar with how to use the Internet/World Wide Web from school and home.  Therefore we want to make sure they have an understanding of how the Internet works, and especially how to be safe on the Internet.

====== Email ======
As of August 2008, we are trying to incorporate the E-mail class into this class.  Prior to this, we did not have enough open time in the Internet class, but we are working to speed up some of the sections in order to teach the e-mail class early and as a part of the Internet class, which makes more sense.

====== Who Owns the Internet ======
  * The Internet is explained as a collection of networks around the world. No one person “owns” the Internet or controls what is on the Internet. Just like with many things in life, it can be used for good or bad purposes.

====== Terms/Acronyms ======

  * Terms and acronyms are explained such as WWW, URL, IP address, HTTP, HTML, .com, .org, etc.

====== Internet Safety ======
The students are asked to go to http://www.safekids.com and read aloud (one at a time) the “Kids rules for online safety”. 

When they are done, the students take online test http://safekids.com/quiz/index.html and the instructors watch for students who miss a question.  A student's screen turns red if they miss a question so instructors should look for red screens and help the student to understand why they missed the question.

 both while in class and whan they get their new computers home. Teachers should always be on the lookout for inappropriate content on the students’ monitors. Often students will try to go to the websites of their favorite music artists that will have bad lyrics, pictures, and music videos.

====== Search Engines ======

The students are taught about search engines. Since we don’t always know what URL to type in to find out information, we use search engines like Google to find these websites. I usually show off some features of Google such as phone number lookup, calculator, weather, movies, etc. Finally, I show them maps.google.com and have them try to locate their houses using satellite imagery. If there is time, I will have a “Contest” to be the first person to find the Arch, Busch Stadium, the White House, etc. The first person to find the location will get some candy or something (we should have a box of candy in the back room).

If time still remains, we quiz the class on concepts we learned that day, and students who answer correctly are rewarded with candy.
