====== Intro to Computers ====== Byteworks uses an OpenOffice Impress presentation to guide the instructor though the class. See [[#see_also|See Also]] below for a link to this document. This wiki page gives an agenda for the first day of class. ====== Goal ====== The goals of this class are: * Confirm parent/student information * Familiarize students with how the classes will be run * Be on time. If early, students can log on and play games, etc. * Up to two absences One absence can be made up at the end of the course. * Be polite * Computer terms * Basic use of a computer ====== Preparation ====== ===== Roll Sheet ===== A roll sheet of the registered students is usually on hand. This Roll-Sheet is generated using the student database. The roll sheet also acts as the attendance sheet. ===== Frankenstein Computer ===== We have a computer in the back room that has been disassembled into its core parts (motherboard, processor, memory, hard disk ,etc). This computer is brought out and the components of the computer are explained to the students. The presentation has the details of these parts. ====== Roll-Call ====== Usually the beginning of the first class is taken up with the housekeeping issues of starting a new class. * Roll-call is taken. Students in attendance should be marked on the roll-sheet. * Permission slips are collected. * Permission slips include the Photo Release form, and the FIXME form. * Both forms can be found in the front desk. * If a student does not have the required sheets, the parents/guardian should sign them now. The sheets are located in the front desk. * Student names and contact information should be verified and corrected in the student database. ====== Name Cards ====== Students should pick a computer, and a name card should be taped to each student's monitor. Index cards can be found on the shelf that is on the other side of the whiteboard wall. ====== Introductions ====== The instructor and the assistants should be introduced. ====== Rules ====== * Must attend all classes to get a computer * One make-up class allowed (This is very important) * Be on time. * Pay attention and respect your classmates and teachers * Turn off the computer before you leave * Ask Questions * Have Fun! ====== Student Experience ====== It's a good idea to find out which students already have a computer and Internet/email experience. ====== Presentation ====== Since much of the class is rather dry lecture, usually the class is stopped about a half-hour before the end of class, and the students are shown the games that are included with Linux. There are several games that are suggested in the OpenOffice Impress presentation. There are many games, so the instructor may want to familiarize yourself with some of the games and how they work. You may want to demonstrate some of your favorite games, and then let them play the last half-hour or so of class. ====== See Also ====== The OpenOffice Impress document shown to students is located in the Byteworks "Staff" Yahoo Group: * Here is the link: [[http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/bworks_staff/files/Education%20Committee/Computer%20Classes/%2A%20Lastest%20Linux%20Presentations/|L1 - Intro to Computers]] * If the link doesn't work, try going to the Byteworks Staff Group - http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/bworks_staff - Go to the "Files" section - Go to Education Committee - Go to Computer Classes - Latest Linux Presentations - Select L1 - Intro to Computers ===== Keyboard ===== Students should try to use the keyboard "properly".
