====== Open Office Impress ====== This is probably the least structured class in the session. I spend a few minutes explaining what presentation software is and why we would use it. Then, we work on doing some slides together. Usually this is what I start out with: ^ Type of Slide ^ Title ^ What to fill in ^ Notes ^ | Title | My Story | "By: " | | | Bulleted list | My Beginning | Information on when and where they were born and where they grew up. | Example info: birth date, hospital, birth weight, neighborhood | | Two column bulleted list | Siblings and Pets | Left column brothers and sisters names and ages, second column pet names/type | | | Text and picture | School | Where they go to school, My favorite subjects then press key to start an indented list | Clipart is not as easy in OpenOffice as it is in MS Office. Teach them how to do a Google image search, have them save the file to disk, and then find the file in OpenOffice. Have them find a picture that relates to their favorite subject. | | Text and picture | When I'm not in School ... | What they like to do when they are not in school. | This time, animate the clipart that they use. | At this point I usually tell the class to continue to work on their presentations and continue to add content and polish up what they wrote with animations. Usually the more creative students will love this, the less creative students will need some inspiration on what types of slides to add. Some suggestions are: hobbies, favorites sports, favorite movies, favorite musicians, favorite TV shows, etc. When we were using Windows and Powerpoint, I would usually spend the last 10 minutes of class letting students who wanted to show off the presentations do it on the projector in front of the class. Most students were shy and apprehensive about this idea until one person did it, then they almost all wanted to. Since we switched to Linux, I haven't found an easy way to share the presentations on the network, and the internet search for clipart took up lots of time that left us without time at the end of class, so we have done without the sharing time since going to Linux. I'd like to bring it back though – it was fun. ====== See Also ====== There is currently no presentation for this class.
