Begin web page design using
HTML and possibly KompoZer
Caleb chose a web page project for his first workshop project. See web_page_project
Showed Caleb and Dominick a few UNIX commands, to learn about files and folders.
We used
Kate to create some simple
HTML pages, and used IceWeasel to browse them.
Learned how to link
HTML pages together
Learned a bit about Tables
Caleb was here today (workshop guided by Bill)
We went through the installation of Kompozer on the instructor machine, and guided Caleb through installing it on a student machine using dpkg
Played around a bit with the
WYSIWYG Kompozer features
Talked more about Linux command line, user and root accounts, package management (command line and synaptic).
Loaded up USB key with working html files and open clipart library to look through for possible web site graphics.
Spent a bit of time with Theresa and Doc in the hardware area.
I spent some time towards the end showing Caleb around some Linux related sites like debian.org and kernel.org, discussing open source software development, project version numbers, and the open source community.
Very interested in getting AptOnCd working, as this will probably be a good way to get software installed on offline student computers. (Described the potential process to Caleb.)
Installed
KompoZer on the instructor computer and the one to its right.
Two other students were allowed to learn typing using
TuxType. However, this provided more distraction for Dominick and Caleb. We will seek to finish this project and polish the workhsop before considering allowing other students begin in the middle of projects.
Bill and Nate were not present for last week's workshop.
Students were informed to bring in their thumbdrives for the next class, and show some progress.
Dominick was present prior to the graduation class, but did not stay.
I talked with Patrick who knows them, and said they're off/on.
Parent involvement would help.
Create at least one other
HTML page, to demonstrate how to create links to other pages.
Lack of Internet connectivity at home will cause delays in project.
Often, friends of Caleb & Dominick want to come in. I've not let them in, telling them it will be about 1 1/2 hrs until they're finished with class. Friends can participate once we've ironed out some of the wrinkles in the workshop program.
Would be interesting to explore the project features of Kompozer, i.e. creating a multiple html/css file web site.
CSS is a bit too much, considering the time it's taking just to do the basics, and the time it's taking to get the students to work on their projects – Nate
Examples:
“Student worked on their project from home”
“Student was very interested in project, and was constantly suggesting improvements”
