Dial-Up Networking

To start dial-up networking, click the “KPPP” icon on the taskbar, opening the KPPP dialog window. Click “Configure…” to set up your account.

KPPP was set up with a default account, called “CIN”. You will need an account based on the information given to you by your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Select “CIN” and click “Delete”, then create a new account, or simply select “CIN” and click “Edit” to change the settings in the “CIN” account. Note that it does not matter what you call the account.

Select the old (default) number, and click “Remove”.

Then click “Add”, and enter the dial-up number provided by your ISP. Be very careful!! If that number is not local, but long-distance, then you will very quickly have a gigantic phone bill. Click “OK” after adding the phone number, then click on “OK” in the “Edit Account” window to accept your changes.

Back at the main KPPP window, change the default login to the user ID you have been given by your ISP. Enter the password in the Password box.

Click “Connect”. The computer dials up to your ISP's computer, and tries to establish a connection.

Once connected, the online connection to the ISP's computer shows up as an icon on the taskbar. You can now open up a web browser and surf the Internet, send email, play online games, etc.

Click on the connection icon (“CIN” in this example) on the taskbar to restore the window. This will show how long you have been online. Click on “Disconnect” to hang up the phone and log off.

If you try to start KPPP when you are already online, you will see an error message, telling you to click “Exit”.

REMEMBER: Disconnect when through; otherwise the phone line stays busy, and no one can call!
