Installing AT&T DSL

AT&T will have sent you either a simple DSL modem ($49 offer) or a wireless router DSL modem ($79 offer). In both cases the instructions will be the same. There are five main steps with details to connect a DSL modem.

  1. boot computer into KDE
  2. connect the hardware
  3. temporarily configure the DSL modem
  4. register at AT&T's website
  5. permanently configure the DSL modem
Details

These instructions assume you have a Debian Etch Linux computer from ByteWorks running KDE as your desktop environment. (Other Linux computers will work, too, the screenshots will just look a little different. They key is to use Konqueror and not Firefox as the webbrowser to register with AT&T).

  • Boot up Linux
  • Insert into the computer the AT&T Yahoo! CD
  • Open the CD by clicking “Open in New Windows” then “OK”
  • Alternate: Press Alt-F2 and type 'konqueror'

  • Open the file ManualSetup.html

  • Follow the instructions on that page, which will include detailed instructions on how to install and connect the various pieces of hardware.

 Copy and paste URL  Connected to modem

  • Authenticate by copying and pasting the username and password

  • At this point, a page may appear asking for the modem's authentication code. The code is printed on a sticker on the bottom of the modem.

  • Connect to the registration site by copying and pasting the URL into a new tab (http://sbcreg.sbcglobal.net/). To open a new tab, click on Location > New Tab.

  • If the buttons at the bottom of the page are hidden or partially obstructed, shrink the font until they are completely visible using View > Shrink Font.

* Continue following the directions to register.

* At the end of the registration process, you will be given a username and password. Write down that information.

* Return to the modem tab, click the “Login” button, clear the existing username and password, and enter the new username and password.

 Re-connect to modem

  • At this point, a page may appear asking for the modem's authentication code. The code is printed on a sticker on the bottom of the modem.
