PC_Tel

How to install and configure a PC_Tel modem under Debian “Etch”

  • Install the modem into an available PCI slot
  • Boot up the machine
  • Look here to get the most current version of scanModem
    • Download scanModem.gz
    • Unzip it with gunzip scanModem.gz
    • Make it executable with chmod +x scanModem
    • Run it with ./scanModem
    • navigate to the created /Modem directory and read ModemData.txt
  • Hopefully scanModem detected the modem, and provides a link where to go and get drivers, like http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/pctel/pctel-0.9.7-9-rht-7.tar.gz
  • Download drivers
  • Untar and unzip per instructions in /Modem/ModemData.txt
  • Navigate to the newly created /pctel-0.9.7-9-rht-7 directory
  • As root, run ./setup and if lucky, modem is detected and activated
  • Add the required drivers to /etc/modules to be loaded on boot:
    • pctel_hw
    • pctel
    • linmodem
  • Follow the instructions on the installation page to create a persistent /dev/modem symlink
  • Test by rebooting and making sure the modem still works
