How can we help parents/students connect to the Internet from their homes?

This page contains ideas of what information to give parents/students about the various Internet options that are available to them.

This a work in progress, and not yet part of the official earn a computer curriculum.

Installing DSL or Cable Internet service is not as easy as installing dial-up service. Byteworks is considering offering and additional Earn-A-Computer class to inform interested parties about their options for Internet access.

We should have information about the various services that could be used to connect to the Internet.

• Cable
• DSL ATT, Verizon Wireless, etc.
• Dial-Up

We should have some plan information available, but mainly plan overviews. A good thing to have would be phone numbers and company contact information.

• Company information (Company names, phone numbers, reliable contacts or technical representatives would be ideal)
• Price / plan information (although we should mention that it's best to call the company for up to date plan info)

• Byteworks could offer an installation demo that is performed at the Byteworks shop. In-house calls are still being debated.
• Byteworks could have printed handouts ready to go home with any student that's interested in the DSL option.

• Give parents the printouts with ATT phone numbers, contract terms, and our setup instructions.
• At the beginning of an Earn A Computer session, inform parents that this class/introduction is available, and get feedback from who's interested.
• At the end of a graduation, offer to either A) Have a more informal session next Saturday or B) Immediately after a graduation ceremony to inform parents about their Internet options.
