Spreadsheet Class

A spreadsheet class is being considered for the Adult_Earn_A_Computer classes.

Use of Spreadsheets

  • Accounting
  • Mathematics
  • Invoices
  • Graphing / Charts, business analysis
  • Point out upside/downside of spreadsheets and alternatives
    • Quick, customizable
    • Can be over-used and become the Hammer in the “If all you have is a Hammer, everything looks like a nail” analogy.
    • Can be used as small databases/storage, but usually only stores 64,000 rows of data.
    • Quicken / Microsoft Money
    • Peachtree Accounting
    • Other business / computational software that is more specialized.

Ideas for Assignment/Lecture

  • The instructor could create a simple checkbook register
  • Or, stock performance tool
    • Show the myriad of accounting functions, just to give students a starting point for something they might want to do.
