Using the Mouse

  • In the picture below, the toad is the mouse. Your hand should be where the mouse is in the picture below.

  • Allow plenty of space to move the mouse. If your mouse is about to fall off your desk, just pick up the mouse and place it in the middle of your mousepad.

Left-Handed Users

Left-handed students can change the mouse buttons so that the index finger controls the main mouse button.

Windows

Use the Control Panel to turn the mouse into a left handed mouse

  1. Click Start
  2. Control Panel
  3. Mouse
  4. Click Reverse mouse buttons
  5. Press Apply/Ok

Ubuntu

  1. System Menu
  2. Preferences
  3. Mouse
  4. Click “Left-Handed Mouse”

Position the Cursor

If nothing happens when you type, then you may need to click the area of the screen where you want to type.

Selecting Text

Drag / Drop

Create / Find Web demo of drag/drop.

GUI Controls

FIXME Find instances of each of the following controls, or write a small ring of web pages which demonstrate standard controls.

Students (especially adult students) are not familiar with the standard GUI controls.

Buttons

A bit obvious but…..

Scroll Bars

I had to repeatedly show users how to scroll up/down left/right using the scroll bars when filling out Gmail forms, etc.

Also point out Page Up/Down keys to quickly scroll.

Check-boxes

Teach that the black checkmark means ‘Yes’, and blank checkbox means ‘No’. This can be demonstrated on any of the annoying warnings that pop up when the users go to an unencrypted page on the Web Browser, or when Firefox/Internet Explorer are fighting to be the default browser. :) There’s always Zone Alarm’s annoying warnings that pop up when a user starts Firefox. :(

Drop-down Boxes

Users not familiar with computers do not know that they should click the triangle on drop-down boxes.

Option Boxes

Show how to select an option, select another option, etc.

Differences

This shows you the differences between the selected revision and the current version of the page.
